Woman ordered to wear sign declaring her crime
SALISBURY, Maryland (AP) -- A woman who stole $4.52 worth of fuel was ordered to stand outside the gas station Friday wearing a sandwich board sign that declared: "I was caught stealing gas."
Sherelle Purnell obeyed the court order, although by the time she arrived 90 minutes late to her noon sentence, the crowd of people that gathered to watch her had dispersed.
"There were parents who came with their children, wanting to teach them a lesson," said Jan Phipps, manager of Gordy's Tiger Mart, which pushed for the unorthodox punishment.
Purnell, 18, who was caught on surveillance tape speeding away from the gas pump, walked along the convenience shop's grassy storefront as passing drivers honked horns and made catcalls.
Andrew Black, who stopped by on his lunch break, was critical of the punishment and converted an old beer poster into a sign protesting high gas prices.
"What is this, the Middle Ages?" said Black.
Purnell declined to comment.
Some passers-by considered the punishment to be a good deterrent.
"Embarrassment is the best way to deal with these things," Randy Jedlicka said.

wow, this is awkward. last time I update was in April I think. everyone probably gave up on my journal by now (hahah) but once I start updating again, people will hopefully notice. hmm, so yeah, in the time that I last update this till now, a lot of things have happened (obviously) and if I were to do a very thorough update, it would be a 100 page entry but ill start from last night i guess.
last night, we went bowling of course. it was the first time i saw choaties (with the exception of romie, youngish, lex, niki, and albert) since the end of school so it was cool. after bowling, romie, lex, shira, and i went over lex's house but not before a pitstop at blockbuster. of course blockbuster was out of Kill Bill 2s for rent so I had to end up buying one but in the end, it was really worth it. we had a good time, talking about everyone "sexual encounters" except for mine of course and the movie was great (except "the eye" made me a little queezy). i mean this summer, im really enjoying these choatie get-togethers because I have come to realize this summer that during fall term, all of my really good female friends will be GONE except for lex, who thankfully will be here to be my asian partner in crime *cough*. lemme list all of my girl friends who will be gone, who I might not see until NEXT SPRING! 1. Romie 2. Youngin' 3. Raw Hell 4. Shira and then more people. oh well, we just will have to chill more before school starts and then chill again at the beginning of winter term. anyways, im done talking now and i promise to update this journal from now on! |

Yes, despite my busy schedule(...), I decided to update this thing at least ONCE (everybody was threatening to delete me as a friend :( ).
Hmmm, so yeah, its spring break and Im lovin it. My chem exam probably sucked ass but its OK cause I dont have to think about it again until I get my report card! So spring break. Yes its great, I dont HAVE to do anything and I dont have any worries. Im leaving for Mexico on Monday and then going to Florida the following week. I swear, at least ten people i kno are going down to Florida during break.

im sitting around waiting for dinner and it smells really good in my room even though im on a different floor than the kitchen.
the only thing i did today was play tennis with my coach. 1:30 to like 5:00. tiring but fun cause i hadnt played in like 3 weeks. i have 4 blisters on my right hand fom gripping my racquet and i feel like popping them and they are painful buts its ok.
i finally saw LOTR ROTK last night. it was good but it was a year since i saw the second one so it took like 20 minutes to remember exactly what was going on hahah. my parents wanted to see LOTR so I went with them and guess who I saw at the theater? O course ROICHEL and I guess she was taking a break from her busy hannukah schedule to watch LOTR again. the second time in three days for her in fact.
look, nemo was finally found! im sure that seeing this picture will make at least 5 people i kno,including SPENCER, cry, but thats ok hahah. i am told when im tired of swimming (which is most of the time), to just sing the little 'keep on swimming' song from the movie but the only problem is i cant swim and sing in my head at the same time.
Speaking of swimming, i hate it. not only do i suck at it but swimming like 5000 yards is kinda pointless. o well, there are things you gotta do sometimes and I guess swim team is one of them. o yeah, there is swim practice for anybody who wants to go during break and i was asked by a few people to go today and i was like, 'over my dead body'. im not gonna spend MY vacation doing something i dont like, especially when its optional. i guess its not THAT bad of an idea considering that if i swim, itll only be easier on me after practices resume after break but whatever, im not thinking about that now. i guess ill just go to the gym and maybe swim like 2000 instead of 5.

yesterday, i got the first two seasons of THE JEFFERSONS on DVD. wow i was so excited cause the jeffersons is the one of the most quality sitcoms ever! 37 episodes of classic tv. i love it, im gonna have to watch another episode before bed tonight! |

were on break, its so sexy. i have nothing to do but update this thing, isnt it great? so yesterday, Bazz was working at whitlocks again with his 'awaken from the dead' boss and his ummm other boss(?) ELAINE SARGEANT! elaine has emphezema (sp?) if you didnt kno and bazz and i always laugh about her coarse voice. so i planned with bazz that i would prank call whitlocks one day just to hear ELAINE's voice. after planning to do this for 2 weeks, i had to do it yesterday. the shitty store who segregates against all races besides whites (hahah) closes at 5 and I got home yesterday at 4:55 and called right away. A person with a manly voice picks up and I think it might be Basie. Im not too sure cause ELaine prob has a man's voice so i just ask for the hours and Bas knos its me (as he later told me) cause im keeping myself from laughing. so i hang up and try again in 2 minutes and basie deliberately doesnt pick up (again as i was told later). when someone picks up from the other end, i hear the most HOARSE and EMPHEZEMIC manly voice i have ever heard in my life. i start laughing and i thought it was basie putting me on but no it was HER. wow someone needs to stop smoking 5 packs a day and i dont mean me! |
